Denizens of 56 Leonard Street in New York City will be sharing their new home with a prime photo-op: a giant metallic statue of a bean, designed and produced by Amish Kapoor. This will be very similar to Kapoor’s Cloud Gate creation in Chicago, which is known locally as just “The Bean” and has become a major photo op, with an estimated 12.9 million visitors in the second half of 2016. The building at 56 Leonard Street itself may also prove attractive to Instagram, given that it looks a lot like a giant jenga sculpture!
- Anish Kapoor is offering a giant bean to the public in Manhattan to express his generosity. The artist is behind the giant Bean at Chicago.
- Giant beans are very popular and mayor Rahm Emanuel stressed this when he emphasized that 12.9 million people visited Millenium Park in 2016 to observe it.
- The giant Bean in Chicago has been called a tourist magnet by the New York Times while The Time labeled it a destination rather than a piece of art.
“”Orange-colored arrows spray painted on the sidewalk along with a continuous curvilinear outline have showed up in front of the skyscraper, next to the main lobby of the development. This can only mean one thing, the Anish Kapoor metallic bean-shaped sculpture will (finally) arrive and on-site installation will hopefully begin sometime soon.””
