Recently Matt Bean, editor-in-chief of Men’s Health magazine, used a hand-held germ detector to check various locations in New York City. Among the items tested, the worst were Citi Bike handlebars, which were rated at 1,500 on a scale used to measure cleanliness. Items which get 50 on the scale are not supposed to touch food.
Among the other items tested was a subway pole, which rated a 45, and a taxi door handle, which rated 424.
- A test conducted using a germ detection device for Men’s Health Magazine found that the handlebars on Citibike bicycles have a rating of 1,500 on the germ scale
- Anything with a germ scale rating higher than 50 should not come into contact with your food
- The next highest rating, at 1,090, was the door handle at a Starbucks location in the city
“Do you use Citi Bike regularly? If so, you may want to keep some Purell handy.”
